Adventures Around the World - Showing that you care

Jim Boyd did it all. The dentist from Pennsylvania volunteered his time to put on a dental clinic for the Tepehuan people of Lajas village, Mexico. Then he funded the clinic, right down to the all the travel expenses.
When the clinic opened Monday morning, the Tepehuans were hesitant to come in. Because outsiders have taken advantage of them in the past, and because of their cultural background, they find it difficult to trust people who are not Tepehuans.
Eventually the patients began to flow in, and the Tepehuans came steadily Tuesday and Wednesday. On Thursday, a torrent of patients came.
Jim spent only four days among the Tepehuans, but his impact could be eternal. His visit was a way for missionary Andrew Ferguson and his family to demonstrate to the people of Lajas that they care, to help him overcome the Tepehuans’ fear and suspicion of outsiders.
You see, it’s one thing to say you care. To say hi, to ask, “How you doin’?” But it takes effort to show that you care. And it takes an even greater effort when people are suspicious of your motives. Haven’t you noticed that suspicion when you’ve witnessed?
It takes a relationship to see a person’s needs, and to get past the mistrust.
As you build a relationship you earn the right to be heard and the potential you have for impact increases dramatically. Take the time to cultivate a relationship based on trust....it does make a difference!
The adventure continues.....
