The Next Step (Installment One)

How Do I Find God’s Direction Today?

In discovering our destiny there is certainly a need for following the direction that God has for each of us. So the question is how do you find it today, in this day and age, in this culture, in the world you live in?

I could list a number of ways that God leads us today, but let me list some of the ways that He constantly works and lead in the lives of many…

First, God leads through His written word

Psalm 119:105 : Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path

Scripture is loaded with precepts and principles that will shape, form, and mold our lives keeping us on track as we live for Jesus. In our Discovering Destiny celebration worship experience two of the keys reminded us to explore wisely and choose the right map. The easiest and best way to do this is to become a good student of God’s word.

Now, let me remind you however to be a GOOD student of God’s word. There is a popular author who has written a best-selling book who boldly writes that God speaks to him through what I would call the “open window” method.

What is the open window method?

That would be sitting by the window and allowing the wind to blow across the pages of your Bible and then closing your eyes and pointing to a verse and saying, “This is God telling me to do this and His message for me this day!”

If you do that you could end up with “Judas went away and hanged himself” as your verse and instruction for the day. Don’t do that, that isn’t what I am talking about when I say He leads through His word.

You wouldn’t go to a doctor with a problem and have him burst through the door and say, “we need to take out your gallbladder!”

You ask, “How do you know that?”

And he’d respond, “Well, I was sitting in my office before I came in here and trusted God to blow the pages of my anatomy book by the open window to your problem. The page ended up on gallbladder!”

I think, I trust, you would run out of the office pretty quick wouldn’t you?

Understand that there are people who are trying to follow God who really do make decisions this way. (Now, there are some who will say that the wind is the Spirit of God blowing through the house at the right time....trust me, I understand that God can work any way He wants, but I have great news for you, He gives us more to hang our faith on than windy days and open windows) My heart goes out to them, they end up in such tough places sometimes as they practice this kind of theological voodoo. They are never really sure where God is leading them and what He is trying to say.

Lets be clear about this, God leads through His word. Being a good student and studying, being a good reader and understanding, and being a good follower and applying God’s word to your life will help you unlock your destiny in amazingly wonderful ways.
