The damage left behind by Hurricane Katrina was extensive. Although most have seen the images of New Orleans it is easy to forget the damage that occurred along the rest of the Gulf Coast.
The CCC "AWAY" Team in Disaster Relief traveled into Ocean Springs, Mississippi for a week of bringing help, resources, supplies, and some encouragement to those who had been ravaged by this disaster.
We often talk about the trusteeship of life here at CCC. One of the things that we remind you of over and over again is that we really own nothing. It all belongs to God and He simply entrusts it to us. The debris along the side of the road, sometimes piled up as high as 10 feet is a stark reminder of how the "things" that we think we own really are things we just can't keep.
The entrance to this families' Dream Home had become a nightmare.
Help on the Gulf Coast is coming from churches all over the country. Here in spite of a broken steeple is a message of hope.
The closer you got to the coast the more extensive the damage. Think of it in this way, imagine a wall of water 8 feet high stretching out for miles in length surging inland. That is what Hurricane Katrina brought on shore driven by winds in excess of 130 miles per hour!
Very few things remain standing in the wake of that kind of storm!
This is the base of a lighthouse and water tower. You will notice the tower has been lifted and driven off the base and deposited in the trees behind it.
Here is a closer shot of what is left of the water tower. This tower survived Hurricane Camille with no damage. Katrina was able to toss and crumble the tower easily.
