Is God Disciplining me?
Posted by Rev. Jeff Dixon, Senior Equipping Minister at Covenant Community Church on Sep 1, 2000, 19:20

I think the disciplining you are referring to is what is talked about in Hebrews 12:5-11. Remember that the passage talks about a Father's love for His children. There are two things that I want to point out about discipline.

First, He sometimes disciplines us for our own good. Most of us can relate to that. I can remember the times I was diciplined as a child andit was for my own good. I learned something.

Second, His discipline is always for rehabilitation, not for retribution. How do I know? Simple, retributive punishment is not a factor in the New Testament. As a matter of fact, the Bible teaches there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ. That is what the cross is all about.

To be honest, I think that when most of us feel that God is judging us or is disciplining us, we are wron. What we are feeling instead is some guilt over something. I know folks who feel so guilty that when they hear about an earthquake or flood, in a third world country, they ask, "what did I do wrong?" Guilt may have been necessary to get you to Jesus, but after that it doesn't have a purpose except to remind us of God's grace and forgiveness, so tht we don't have to feel guilty any more. When you feel that God is chastening or disciplining you, it may be nothing more than indegestion.
