Modern Conveniences
Posted by Rev. Jeff Dixon, Senior Equipping Minister at Covenant Community Church on Sep 1, 2000, 19:07

We live in a day and age of modern conveniences. The popular notion that modern appliances have reduced the time required to accomplish work at home is just not true. As a matter of fact, according to historical home economists, people spend more time today doing household tasks than women in the colonial period did. The modern appliances of today have reduced the amount of physical effort needed to do some tasks, and the standard of living for most have improved. We are more comfortable and we live in healthier environments. . but we havenít saved any time.

The short explanation tells us that every time great advances in technology are made, the culture we live in changes. With the invention, for example, of washing machines, vacuum cleaners, and electric stoves we ushered in an era when people had more clothes to wash, larger homes to clean, and greater amounts of food were able to be bought and stored. Indoor running water was a great advance, and with it came the building of bigger bathrooms and of course they must be cleaned as well. I think you get the idea.

Whether we want to admit it or not, we read what the historians teach us and come up with our own conclusions. I believe that most of us will manage to fill up every available second we have. We will fill it up with work or play, which many work at very hard. Time truly is the most precious commodity we have today. That also means that if our time is valuable, then it is more important than ever to make sure that you set aside time for your spiritual journey as well. Make sure you are spending time doing the things that God would put the biggest priority on. You canít say, ďOne day Iíll get around to that, when I have more time. . .Ē The truth is you wonít get around to it, you wonít have more time, unless you make it. Make time for the Father today.
