Imagination: Where Dream and Ministry Meet

Where Dream and Ministry Meet

Our theme for the new year at CCC is IMAGINATION.

IMAGINATION (defined) : The act or power of creating new ideas by combining previous experiences.

IMAGINATION has been a part of the ministry of Covenant from the very beginning. Years ago when CCC began it centered around a dream that real people could make a difference in a real world. Through the years Covenant truly has been able to “touch and change the world with the love of Jesus,” and in many ways Covenant has become a place where dreams and ministry meet. That is by design, not by accident.

Walt Disney once said: “There is no secret to what we do. . .We keep moving forward - opening new doors - doing new things because we are curious. And curiosity keeps leading us down new paths. We are always exploring and always experimenting. . .we call it Imagineering. Imagineering is the blending of creative imagination with technical know how.”

I like what Mr. Disney had to say. I believe that in ministry we need to be curious, courageous, creative, and hopefully that will become contagious. We won’t always be perfect in all we do, that is impossible, but we will always strive toward excellence.

When you think about it. . .Imagination is where dream and ministry do meet. When you use a little imagination we will be. . .
Curious. . .We will always been interested in how to do something different and better than we have ever done it before. The phrase, “no one has ever don it that way before” will be inspiration for us to try to discover new and innovative ways to touch and change the world.

Courageous. . .If we are going to make a difference we will have to be courageous. Anytime you do anything that is innovative and daring it takes courage. It is frightening but the church in the world today is not very courageous. The church has decided to do ministry by mimicry and the end result is that the world see the “same old stuff” when they see the church. We must have the courage to be daring and bold. Our message will never change, but methods can be changed in a heartbeat.

Creative. . . We must always strive for the best and freshest way to accomplish the ministry we are called to. If you are going to touch and change the world it cannot happen without creativity. Creativity stems from the heart of God. It is His creative nature that brought into reality the incredible world that we live in. Scripture teaches us that we are created in His image and so it is safe to say “we are created to be Creative.” In attempting to impact the world our imagination will free us to be creative in ministry.

Contagious. . .When we are doing it right, I really believe that we will be contagious. I think one of the greatest compliments that I have ever heard is that at CCC the “unexpected is the expected.” Hopefully that will translate into the lives of people so that the excitement that happens here will be contagious. The things we do, the things we learn, the events we are a part of, and the future of what God is doing with us, will be things that effect and infect the people we come in contact with a desire to see and be a part of what God is doing.

Imagination is at the heart of the ministry of CCC. Perhaps we ought to consider calling ourselves Imagination Incorporated, a place where we are constantly allowing God to give us fresh and exciting dreams as to how we can touch and change the world with His love. (Now relax we really won’t change our name, it was just an idea!)

There are two ingredients that are necessary to change the world:

1st: A growing dynamic relationship with Jesus Christ

2nd: The freedom to dream and chase dreams

Here at Covenant we are in an environment where that can happen. As we dream and imagine, remember that dreams do not come true all by themselves. Instead, they are the end result of a commitment to hard work and excellence. No one promised us that anything in ministry would be easy, but it will be worth the effort if we do it with excellence.

Someone said, you can measure a person by the stretch of their imagination. You might want to consider imagination when it comes to ministry as a preview of life’s coming attractions. In other words, we are using our imagination to make a difference that will last an eternity. Imagination can be our wings in some ways as we soar to the next level in ministry and become all that God calls us to be.

In Ephesians 3:20-21 we read: “Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or IMAGINE, according to His power that is at work within us. To Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever!”

In those verses we are reminded that God is a God of imagination and His imagination is a lot bigger than ours. He has big plans and great undertakings for each of us to be a part of. In these verse we discover Dreams to Dream, Momentum for Ministry, and a call to Excellence for Eternity. As the new year begins at Covenant, let’s embrace those together.

There really is no better place to be than at Covenant Community Church. As this next year of ministry begins we are just getting started and you ain’t seen nothing yet! Just IMAGINE what the future holds!
