Can You Remember 1923?
Posted by Rev. Jeff Dixon, Senior Equipping Minister at Covenant Community Church on Jan 2, 2002, 13:24

Can you remember 1923? If you can, or if you are a history buff try to answer the following questions:

In 1923. . .

Who was the president of the largest steel company?

Who was the president of the largest gas company?

Who was president of the New York Stock exchange?

Who was considered to be the greatest wheat speculator?

Who was the president of the Bank of International Settlement?

Who was known as the Great Bear of Wall Street?

These men were considered to be the most successful men of their day. They had discovered the secret of being leaders and making vast sums of money. They were looked upon as men of power, prestige, fame, and fortune. As we face a new year, do you know what became of these men?

The president of the largest steel company, Charles Schwab died a pauper. The president of the largest gas company, Edward Hopson, was declared insane. The president of the NYSE, Richard Whitney, was released from prison so that he could die at home. The greatest wheat speculator, Arthur Cooger, died penniless. The president of the Bank of International Settlement shot himself. The great bear of Wall Street, Cosabee Rivermore, died of suicide.

Let’s give ourselves an opportunity as the new year begins to snap back into place our priorities. Jesus said, “What does it profit a man to gain the whole word and lose his soul?” The apostle Paul had everything going his way. Then he discovered Jesus and his life had new purpose and meaning. In a moment of reflection and teaching Paul would write, “I count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for who I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ.”

The key to success, the top priority, the doorway to happiness and fulfillment for us all is found in Jesus. We must remember this truth as the new year begins, that is the message that we have to share.
