The Right Order-Tales to Astonish (I)
Jesus says that we are love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength (Mark 12:30)
There is something amazing about how Jesus gives us a new heart when we trust and follow Him. It shouldn't surprise us because God has been in the heart transplanting business for a long time. Remember back in Ezekiel 36:26? We read "I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you, I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh"
Having the heart of Christ beating in you changes everything.
I wonder sometimes why followers of Jesus are so often viewed as harsh, loud, obnoxious, and uncaring? I guess sometimes it is because we have earned it but the followers I am around don't tend to be this way at all. As a matter of fact CCC Ministries is a place where people have big hearts that are willing to give and share what they have with others. Here we call it touching and changing the world.
My gut tells me that one of the reasons the body of Christ is viewed as a bit heartless sometimes is because we have engaged the culture backwards or out of order. We have approached the culture Mind First instead of Heart First.
Notice Jesus talked about love in the following order in the verse above
1 Heart
2 Soul
3 Mind
4 Strength
I think sometimes we have tried to change the culture mind first instead of heart first.
I am not the wisest person in the room but I know that minds aren't willing to listen until hearts have been unlocked and opened. I think we open hearts by sharing ours. The heartbeat of Jesus is a heart that beats with compassion and caring for the world around us. A heart that beats in same "thump-bump" as the heartbeat of Jesus and sees a world that Jesus loves so much He died for it.
It has been my discovery that as you love others it tends to break down barriers, doors, and move beyond obstacles quicker than reasoning and arguments ever accomplish.
Perhaps if we could get things in the right order and learn how to love as Jesus instructs us to love we might find our lives changing and the world around us changing as well.
So as you ponder and pray over the things you heard in Love to the 4th Power challenge yourself to make sure you are learning to love in the right way!
Love to the 4th Power - Astonished: Week 1
Prayer Experience
At the end of Love to the 4th Power you heard Jeff Dixon tell the amazing story of Miss Bettye of Childrens Memorial Hospital in Chicago.
Now that you have heard her story you have the opportunity to pray for her and her amazing ministry to children, families, and staff of CMH.
Pick a day during this upcoming week and remember to pray for Miss Bettye
A bit more info about Miss Bettye:
Over the years, Bettye Tucker has had surgery on both feet, bones taken out, pins put in. Both her knees have been replaced. And she suffers aches and pains from arthritis too. This summer her car was rear-ended, and it kept her out of work for a couple of nights. But then she was back on the job, bruised and happy to be cooking again.
“I’m a praying lady,” she says, quietly. “I pray every night, for every room and every person in the hospital. I start with the basement, and I go up, floor by floor, room by room. I pray for the children, I pray for the families, I pray for the nurses and the doctors.
“I say, every night while I’m driving in on the expressway, ‘Oh, Lord, I don’t know what I’ll face tonight, but I pray you’ll guide me through.’?”
Just might be, that divine helping on the side is the most essential item on Miss Bettye’s menu. The one she stirs in every broth, and every whisper. The ingredient that makes her the perpetual light shining in the all-night kitchen.

The Right Reaction - Tales to Astonish (II)
Ezekiel 36:26 "I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you. I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh"
People who are close to the kingdom are willing to stand up with courage and live a life that lines up with what God has called them to be...no matter what!
When you learn to love God with all your heart your reaction will be compassion.
Compassion is the right reaction!
I'm not saying there is not a place for rebuking, correcting, and exhorting
There is!
Sometimes that is the most loving thing you can do!
But even those things can be and must be done in the spirit of compassion
It is much easier to ACT like a Christian than to REACT like one! Anyone can put on an act But the way you react reveals what is really in your heart
If you love God with all your heart, you won't just act like it, you will react like it!
Ask yourself...Today are you acting like a Follower of Jesus Christ or as the day unfolds are you reacting like He would react?

The Wonderful World of Color-Tales to Astonish (III)
Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color
Walt Disney's anthology series, commonly called The Wonderful World of Disney, premiered on ABC on October 27, 1954 under the name Disneyland.
Hosted by Walt himself, the show presented cartoons and other material (some original, some pre-existing) from the studio library. This is significant because the series was the first one from a major movie studio. Other studios feared television would be the death of them.
The show spawned the Davy Crockett craze of 1955 with the miniseries about the historical American frontiersman, starring Fess Parker in the title role. Millions of dollars of merchandise were sold relating to the title character, and the theme song, The Ballad of Davy Crockett, was a hit record that year. Three historically-based hour-long shows aired in late 1954/early 1955, and were followed up by two dramatized installments the following year. The TV episodes were edited into two theatrical films later on.
In July of 1955, the opening of Disneyland was covered on this show, hosted by Walt along with Bob Cummings, Art Linkletter, Ronald Reagan, and various other guests.
The series moved to NBC in 1961 to take advantage of that network's ability to broadcast in color. In a marvelous display of foresight, Disney had filmed many of the earlier shows in color, so they were able to be repeated on NBC. To emphasize the new color feature, the series was re-dubbed Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color .
When Walt Disney died in 1966, no one replaced him as host, as everyone agreed that his presence, characterized by a warm, folksy persona, was irreplaceable. The series continued to get solid ratings, often in the Top 20, until the mid-1970s. At this time, The Walt Disney Company was facing a decline in fortunes, with fewer people going to their movies. It also did not help that CBS had placed 60 Minutes directly opposite it. The show continued to slip in the ratings until NBC cancelled it in 1981. Much of the decline is often attributed to the declining amount of new material. The show became increasingly dependent on airings of theatrical features and cartoons and reruns of older episodes.
After the studio underwent a change in management, the series was revived on ABC in 1986, with new CEO Michael Eisner hosting. years.
When the show was revived in 1986, the format was similar to a movie-of-the-week, with family-oriented TV movies from the studio making up much of the material. Theatrical films were also shown, but with the advent of cable TV and home video, they were not as popular. The 1997 revival has followed this format as well.
Throughout its years, the show underwent a number of title changes.

Pants on the Ground- Tales to Astonish (IV)
Wonder in the Word!
A few years ago, researchers from the National Institutes of Mental Health did a study that involved a simple motor task. As subjects performed a finger-tapping exercise, researchers did MRI brain scans to identity which part of the brain was involved in the exercise. The subjects were then asked to perform that simple motor task everyday for four weeks. At the end of four weeks, researchers repeated their brain scans and found that in every instance, that area of the brain had expanded. Their brains had literally recruited new nerve cells and rerouted neuronal connections.
Juxtapose that with Romans 12.
"Do not be conformed any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of the mind."
How is our mind renewed? The one word answer is Scripture. Scripture literally re-scripts our brain. As we read Scripture, much like the finger-tapping exercise, we are recruiting new nerve cells and rewiring neuronal connections. The end goal? Not knowledge! The end goal is the mind of Christ. As you read Scripture you are downloading the mind of Christ. His words become our operating system.

Pants on the Ground- Tales to Astonish (IV)
The Bomb is NOT a Dud!!!!
Jeff Dixon shared the following story during Celebration Worship: For years a WWII-era bomb rested outside a bar in Kodiak, Alaska—a harmless dud that people could marvel at, take pictures of, climb on. Seeing as the bomb is an important part of history, a local resident decided it needed a better resting place, so they donated it to the Kodiak Military History Museum. And when military officials were preparing the bomb for a display at the museum, they realized something pretty important: the bomb wasn't a dud.
Now make sure you read that correctly! A World War II relic that was displayed outside an Alaska bar for years turned out not to be a dud. Even though most thought it was.
According to the reports on January 14, 2010 - Soldiers detonated the 1,263-pound aerial bomb. Radio station KMXT reports it lost some of its boom after 60 years, but it did go with a bang.
Soldiers from the Fort Richardson Explosive Ordnance detail inspected the bomb and determined it still had Dunnite, a highly explosive material also known as "Explosive D."
When pressed for an explanation as to why there was an active bomb sitting in front of a local bar, the response was "No one ever looked at it that closely!" (50+ years!)
Jeff made the application by saying that for many of us this is a great description of how we approach the Word of God. We like being associated with it, occassionally we think about it, every once in a while we get close to it, but we never really look at it closely enough to allow it to explode in our lives, radically alter the landscape of our existence, or ignite within us a desire to be different. We often miss the wonder of God because we don't discover Him in His Word.
Perhaps it is time we look more closely.

I've Never Thought About Things Like That! Tales to Astonish (V)
Suggestion One
Your mind is a muscle. It needs to be stretched to stay sharp. It needs to be prodded and pushed to perform. Let it get idle and lazy on you, and that muscle will become a pitiful mass of flab in an incredibly brief period of time.
How can you stretch your mind? What are some good mental exercises that will keep the cobwebs away? Here is a suggestion:
READ. You may be too crippled and too poor to travel—but between the covers of a book are ideas and insights that await the joy of discovery. William Tyndale was up in years when he was imprisoned. Shortly before his martyrdom he wrote to the governor asking for:
A warmer cap, a candle, a piece of cloth to patch my leggings. . . . But above all, I beseech and entreat your clemency to . . . permit me to have my Hebrew Bible, Hebrew grammar and Hebrew Dictionary, that I may spend time . . . in study.
The powers of your perception will be magnified through reading. Read wisely. Read widely. Read slowly. Scan. Read history as well as current events . . . magazines and periodicals as well as classics and poetry . . . biographies and novels as well as the daily news and devotionals.
Don't have much time?
Neither did John Wesley. But his passion for reading was so severe he made it a part of his schedule—he read mostly on horseback. He rode between fifty and ninety miles a day with the book propped up in his saddle . . . and got through thousands of volumes during his lifetime. Knowing that reading attacks thickness of thought, Wesley told many a younger minister either to read—or get out of the ministry.
Read..and Scripture is a great place to start!
I've Never Thought About Things Like That! - Astonished: Week 5
I've Never Thought About Things Like That! Tales to Astonish (V)
Suggestion Two
Now our first suggestion was to Read..and Scripture is a great place to start!
Now here is suggestion number two-TALK!
That is correct, you read it right...Talk.
Conversation adds the oil needed to keep our mental machinery running smoothly. The give-and-take involved in rap sessions, the question-answer dialogue connected to discussion, provides the grinding wheel needed to keep us keen.
Far too much of our talk is surface jargon . . . shallow, predictable, obvious, pointless.
Talk is too valuable to waste.
Leave the discussion of people and weather to the newscasters!
Delve into issues, ideas, controversial subjects, things that really matter.
Ask and answer "why" and "how" . . . rather than "what" and "when." Probe. Question.
Socrates was considered wise—not because he knew all the answers, but because he knew how to ask the right questions.
Few experiences are more stimulating than eyeball-to-eyeball, soul-to-soul talks that force us to think andreason through specifics. For the sheer excitement of learning, talk!
Who have you talked with this week about what God is doing in their life and your life? Who have you talked to this week and asked then how you could pray for them? Who have you talked to this week that has shared something you never knew before? Who have you...well, you get the idea...Talk it up! it is a great way to get the mind working...and after all, we are supposed to love God with all our mind.
What could be better than spiritual conversations?

I've Never Thought About Things Like That! Tales to Astonish (V)
Suggestion Three
Here we go with a third suggestion on ways to engage your mind as we continue exploring what Jesus was talking about when He said, "love God with all of your mind..."
We have offered the suggestions of Reading and Talking...
Now we offer the third...WRITE.
That's right, you read it right, we said WRITE!
Thoughts disentangle themselves over the lips . . . and through the fingertips.
How true! (Thanks for that phrasing Charles Swindoll)
The old gray matter increases its creases when you put it down on paper.
Start a journal. A journal isn't a diary. It's more. A journal doesn't record what you do—it records what you think. It spells out your ideas, your feelings, your struggles, your discoveries, your dreams. In short, it helps you articulate who you are.
Spiritual journaling about what you are reading, studying, questions you are asking, notes you are taking, outlines of sermons you are hearing, prayer lists, and ideas all become a part of a spiritual book featuring your journey of faith.
In the CCC Depth study one of the things you are asked to do is design the pathway you are going to take to add depth to your life. You have to be able to track this path in some way...writing it down is the best way to keep account of what is going on.
So write! You don't have to be a writer to be a writer.
Who knows? Your memoirs might make the bestseller list in the future.

Stumped And Stuck -or- Tough And Thinking? Historical Documents Tales to Astonish (VI)
The Celebration Worship Experience featured a study based on 2 Peter 1:16-21
The study was used to help us put some brains in our faith and love God with all of our mind. We dealt specifically with the question that each follower must come to grips with, "Why do I believe the Word of God?"
Beyond answers like, "I was just brought up that way," or "It has been my personal experience that it works for me," we must be able to have carefully given thought to what we believe so when we explain it will make sense to those who are willing to hear.
The following installments feature some of the things that were talked about (taken from notes and edited transcripts. These were not originially designed to be read in the form of an article)
1) Think about the historical documents
It is a reliable collection of historical documents
(v.16a) We did not follow cleverly invented stories when we told you about the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ
The Bible is comprised of 66 books
Written on 3 different continents- Asia, Africa, Europe
Written in 3 different languages - Hebrew, Greek, and Aramaic
Written by over 40 authors who never met one another...over a period of 1400 years
Names, dates, places, it is full of history that is verifiable
There are over 23, 000 archeological digs that are born out of Scripture that have yet to refute anything historically in the Bible
It is a reliable collection of historical documents
Stumped and Stuck -or- Tough and Thinking? - Astonished: Week 6
Stumped And Stuck -or- Tough And Thinking? Eyewitnesses Tales to Astonish (VI)
2) Think about the eyewitnesses
written by eyewitnesses during the lifetime of other eyewitnesses,
(v.16b) but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty.
Charles Colson, convicted for his involvement in the Watergate scandal as an assistant to President Richard Nixon, writes:
When I am challenged on the resurrection, my answer is always that the disciples and 500 others gave eyewitness accounts of seeing Jesus risen from the tomb. But then I'm asked, "How do you know they were telling the truth?
Maybe they were perpetrating a hoax." My answer to that comes from an unlikely source: Watergate.
Watergate involved a conspiracy perpetuated by the closest aides to the president of the United States—the most powerful men in America, who were intensely loyal to their president.
But one of them, John Dean, turned state's evidence, that is, testified against Nixon, as he put it, "to save his own skin"—and he did so only two weeks after informing the president about what was really going on—two weeks!
The cover-up, the lie, could only be held together for two weeks, and then everybody else jumped ship in order to save themselves.
Now, the fact is that all those around the president were facing was embarrassment, maybe prison. Nobody's life was at stake.
But what about the disciples? Twelve powerless men, peasants really, were facing not just embarrassment or political disgrace, but beatings, stonings, execution.
Every single one of the disciples insisted, to their dying breaths, that they had physically seen Jesus bodily raised from the dead.
Don't you think that one of those apostles would have cracked before being beheaded or stoned? That one of them would have made a deal with the authorities? None did.
Men will give their lives for something they believe to be true; they will never give their lives for something they know to be false.
It's a historic fact, one convincingly established by the evidence—and one you can bet your life upon.
In 1 Corinthians 15 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Peter, and then to the Twelve. After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers at the same time, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep.
Jesus appeared to Peter, the disciples, the followers
Do the math-when this was written, minimum 300 eyewitnesses still alive
Stumped and Stuck -or- Tough and Thinking? - Astonished: Week 6
Stumped And Stuck -or- Tough And Thinking? Eyewitnesses Tales to Astonish (VI)
Now, now...we know about the DaVinci Code...
There are critics that claim the Bible has been designed on purpose to present a picture of Jesus as God. To accomplish that a number of conspiracy models have been offered.
The Translation Argument
This is a favorite of professors- (they will claim) the Bible has been translated so many times it is entirely different
These guys ought to know better-it does not matter how many times it has been translated IT MATTERS WHAT YOU ARE TRANSLATING FROM!
The translations come from the Greek, Hebrew, and Aramaic
The translations are not translations from translations
The translations go back the most ancient documents
The Altered Text Arguments
Or in other words some Monks Cooked the Book (so to speak)
(This is all conjecture, no proof)
According to conspiracy theorists: In 324 the council of Nicaea comes together and demands that there is going to be only 66 books...in these books it must appear as if Jesus is Lord
Now IF this really was the work of the council of Nicaea...they didn't have to just change 66 books, they would have had to have changed them all...
Here is the problem
There are over 6000 manuscripts of the NT alone (portions of it anyway)
That may not impress you
But compare-Julius Caesar's Gallic wars-we have translated from 12 copies in existence. The earliest copy we have was made 1000 years after the original.
Aristotle's Poetics-less than 10 copies. The earliest copy left in existence was made 1400 years after the original.
Socrates- 0 copies...we only know about him because of what was written by Plato
BUT-It is a true statement...We don't have any of the originals (Bible letters)
For some this is the AHA moment! It shouldn't be. The reason is because of how far back we can go.
AD 120 is as close as we can get...so within 100 years of the events happening [Ryland's Papyrus (P52)]
However we must remember that Jesus said go into all the world
The problem with people groups, they speak different languages
Syriac, Coptic, and Latin became translations within two centuries
The monks in order of fulfill the work of the conspiracy would have to change all the Greek, Hebrew, Aramaic translations...change them, hide the ink work, get them back where they had borrowed them from without getting caught and tell no one what they had done.
In addition they would have to steal all the translations in Syriac, Coptic, and Latin...change them, hide the ink work, and get them back without getting caught.
Oh, wait, they would also have to fix the problem notes from the early church fathers who wrote notes based on what the Scripture said...according to research the bulk of the New and Old Testament can be reproduced from the writings of the early church fathers alone.
Bruce Metzger says in his research all but 11 verses of the Bible can be recreated from these original writings...
So the monks would have to steal the Greek, Hebrew, Aramaic, Syriac, Coptic, and Latin, and all the notes of the early church fathers...change them, hide the ink work, put them back where they got them...and learn how to lie in all of those languages in just the same way
To a rational, realistic, and reasonable mind it is a bigger stretch to believe the conspiracy theories wrapped around the Council of Nicea that it is to believe that the Bible is credible
written by eyewitnesses during the lifetime of other eyewitnesses,
10 Errors Found in 'The Da Vinci Code' The Top 10 List Here you can find at least 10 Errors Found in 'The Da Vinci Code' Now these probably are not a real exclusive "top ten" because The DaVinci Code is loaded with errors...but these are good enough for a top ten list...so here we go...get ready to read the error and then check out the "truth" Click the link above to read the listing...
How can we trust the reliability of the Scriptures? How can we trust the reliability of the Scriptures? Were there other authentic sources or gospels that were discarded in the process?
Here’s a quote from the book. One of the characters in The Da Vinci Code says, “The Bible is a product of man, my dear, not of God. History has never had a definitive version of the book. The Bible as we know it today was collated by the pagan Roman Emperor Constantine the Great in 325 AD.” This questions the Scripture. How did we get it? How do we know we can trust it?
’It was not until the First Council of Nicea in 325 AD that the church established the divinity and equality of the Son in the Trinity. Is this right?
The Da Vinci Code says: ‘Until 325 AD, Jesus was viewed by his followers as a mortal prophet, a great and powerful man, but a man nonetheless. A mortal.’It was not until the First Council of Nicea in 325 AD that the church established the divinity and equality of the Son in the Trinity. Is this right?
Stumped And Stuck -or- Tough And Thinking? Supernatural Events Tales to Astonish (VI)
3) Think about the supernatural events
they report supernatural events
(v.17-18) For he received honor and glory from God the Father when the voice came to him from the Majestic Glory, saying, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased." We ourselves heard this voice that came from heaven when we were with him on the sacred mountain.
The audible voice of God almighty
Now we have the actual voice of God....
This is not everyday stuff..this is not superhuman this is supernatural
He was Crucified, Dead, Buried, and then Risen
You do understand that if the Roman Government or the Jewish Leaders of the day could explain this away, produce a body, or pull the plug on this upstart group of followers they would have...they just could not!
they report supernatural events

Stumped And Stuck -or- Tough And Thinking? Fulfilled Prophecy Tales to Astonish (VI)
4) Think about the fulfilled prophecy
they report supernatural events that took place in fulfillment of specific prophecies
(v.19-20) And we have the word of the prophets made more certain, and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a light shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet's own interpretation.
Psalm 22-
MY God why have you forsaken me....
My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
Why are you so far from saving me,
so far from the words of my groaning?
(Why does Jesus refer to a song when He is being crucified?-If you were around in the first century you would have understood)
If you read the Psalm and the event it describes you discover it to be the account that takes place at the cross as Jesus was crucified
This was written 1000 years before Jesus was born by a man who had never seen a crucifixion...crucifixion had not been invented yet
The following probabilities are taken from Peter Stoner in Science Speaks (Moody Press, 1963) to show that coincidence is ruled out by the science of probability.
Stoner says that by using the modern science of probability in reference to eight prophecies, 'we find that the chance that any man might have lived down to the present time and fulfilled all eight prophecies is 1 in 10 to the the 17th power."
That would be 1 in 100,000,000,000,000,000. In order to help us comprehend this staggering probability, Stoner illustrates it by supposing that "we take 10 to the 17th power silver dollars and lay them on the face of Texas. They will cover all of the state two feet deep.
"Now mark one of these silver dollars and stir the whole mass thoroughly, all over the state.
Blindfold a man and tell him that he can travel as far as he wishes, but he must pick up one silver dollar and say that this is the right one. What chance would he have of getting the right one?
Just the same chance that the prophets would have had of writing these eight prophecies and having them all come true in any one man."
Stoner considers 48 prophecies and says, "we find the chance that any one man fulfilled all 48 prophecies to be 1 in 10 to the the 157th power, or 1 in
100,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,00 0,000,000,000,000,000,000,
000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,00 0,000,000,000,000,000,000, 000, 000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,00 0.
they report supernatural events that took place in fulfillment of specific prophecies
Stumped and Stuck -or- Tough and Thinking? - Astonished: Week 6
Stumped And Stuck -or- Tough And Thinking? Authorship Tales to Astonish (VI)
5) Think about the Divine authorship
and claim that their writings are divine instead of human in origin"
(v.21) For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.
Some people will say they can't got there...they just aren't divine!
Men wrote them, so because men wrote them they aren't reliable
Think about that statement for a moment
Men have written every book!
By that criteria no book you have ever read would be reliable!
Or- Prove it to me scientifically
Lets go over the scientific method. The scientific method-it consists of all things being observable, measurable, and repeatable
You don't use the scientific method to prove something to be historical
By the scientific method you can't prove that George Washington was the first president of the United States
When people say that they can't believe because it can't be proven scientifically they trap themselves-they are using the wrong argument in order to make an objection...
Now that you know what the scientific method is-what method must we use to look back through history?
History uses the evidence method....
The evidence that you bring into a courtroom setting
Can you create a trail of evidence that is reasonable, rationale, and real
What might that include?
Writers, authors, archaeology, events, eyewitnesses, predictions, fulfilled predictions, and additional history
and claim that their writings are divine instead of human in origin
Will this win arguments? Nah...probably not!
But when you think about it...it makes sense
Now you have an answer to why you can believe the Bible
