What's in a logo? Believe...
Posted by Rev. Jeff Dixon, Senior Equipping Minister, CCC Ministries on Jul 30, 2008, 15:31

What is in a logo?

Now that is a great question...the logo you see for this year's Birthday Celebration is simple, yet is was not created by accident. When you check it out you will notice a few things about it.

It is a series of gears, interconnected, to accomplish a task-this is a metaphor of the incredible ministry of Covenant Community Church. People, real people working together to make something happen, each person has a part, plays a vital role, is a vital cog, the teaching of CCC from the very first celebration worship event right up to this day has always been that "the church is not a building, it is people...the  called out of Jesus...working together."

The world is a part of this logo as a symbol of the touching and changing the world mission we are on at CCC...in the logo the gears could be turning the world...as followers we are a part of the world moving in the right direction, we are called to be people of impact, to make and shape the culture.

There is motion, action, forward progress...if a gear stops or does not work..then things are not right....and together throughout our history we have been changing the world! In many ways this logo is a perfect representation of how we do ministry.

Now you may be thinking to yourself, this looks vaguely familiar. If you thought that you have a great eye! If you didn't notice, keep reading, and then you will see the connection.

The starting place for this design was actually the sign for the Carousel of Progress at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom.

The ideas of progress, always moving forward, and always moving into a brighter future was all a part of the concepts as we were getting ready for this birthday event.

The history of Walt Disney's Carousel of Progress  starts in the early 60's when many companies were preparing for the World's Fair in New York City in 1964 and 1965.  The Walt Disney Company, then known as WED Enterprises (Walter Elias Disney) was hired by several companies, Ford and Pepsi among them, to design and create exhibits to boldly represent their respective corporations.  None, however, so grabbed the founder's heartstrings like the exhibit he was hired to produce for General Electric.  Progressland's Carousel Theater would be a completely new experience for Walt, and a challenge he couldn't wait to throw himself into.

Walt immersed himself in the project, even choosing the voices for the show personally, to make sure that the characters reflected the Midwestern values and attitudes that he felt so strongly about. Trying his hardest to let the engineers do the work, he took every opportunity to make his point ever so clear about what story the show should convey.

"When we were designing the thing, Walt couldn't resist getting up and doing the work himself," explains imagineer, John Hench. "He jumped in the bathtub for the Cousin that was visiting--the guy who invented air conditioning with the fan and block of ice. And he'd say, `What would Cousin Orville do if he were in here?' Walt turned the tub around to face the audience, and he took off his shoes and wiggled his toes to show us. He went through the whole bit. He did several of the acts and even vented dialogue as he went. He was the best story man, particularly on the small bits of business, and it's the small individual things that you never forget."

Richard and Robert Sherman, writers of many of the most memorable Disney songs of all time, collaborated once again to write what would become the theme song for one of Walt's most enduring and endearing attractions, the Carousel of Progress.

"Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow," which made its debut along with the Carousel at the 64-65 World's Fair in New York, portrayed exactly the same idea as that of the show - "Tomorrow is just a dream away." As much as Walt loved this song, a new Sherman Bros. theme was introduced in 1978, after the COP's move to Walt Disney World. "Best Time of Your Life" became an instant favorite among guests at the Magic Kingdom, and ran up until 1994 when the original song was put back in place.

Now none of this Disney connection comes as any surprise to those who know Covenant. One visitor from England who watches us on-line said, "There were two things on my list to do in Central Florida, visit Disney World and Covenant!"

Someone else once made the observation that going to church at Covenant is a lot like going to Walt Disney World....and why not? Expecting the unexpected, discovering new challenges, new things to explore, racing toward the future, and shaping the culture is very much a part of the minsitry of CCC.

As Covenant embarks on a brand new era in ministry the words of the song ring true in describing the ministry of CCC... "There's a great big beautiful tomorrow, shining at the end of every day...there's a great big beautiful tomorrow, just a dream away!"

The question is Do You Believe It?

At Covenant, "CCC-ing is believing!"
