He Is...You Are

An atheist once asked a Christian, "Do you really believe that fish story about Jonah? How could he have possibly been swallowed by a big fish?"
“I don't know,” replied the believer, “but when I get to Heaven I'll ask him.”
“But suppose he isn't there,” the atheist challenged.
“Then YOU'LL have to ask him,” came the quick reply!
Once you hear the truth you must decide what to do with it. The truth of the matter is that HE is TRUTH and we must learn how to deal with him. I read an interesting article recently. It asked, Do you believe the Bible is true?
In 1861 the French academy of science listed 51 scientific facts that contradicted statements in Scripture. As of today all 51of those "facts” have been disproved by science itself. Some of the things that it pointed out were:
3,000 years before microbes were discovered as the cause of many diseases, Moses gave the Israelites health regulations that are still scientifically accurate today (Leviticus)
While most of the world believed the world was flat and was supported by pillars or elephants, Job revealed that the earth "hangs on nothing" (Job 26:7)
The conclusion is simple: The Bible is full of amazing, unique, and exciting things. The passage used in this article is found in 2 Peter 1:16-21.
Let’s get started with an Entrance Ramp. Notice what Peter says about the inspiration of Scripture (v.21). For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God, as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit. Peter, an eyewitness, writes that the Bible is true, every part of it, and is good for the growing up of the people of God. The proof of God’s word can be seen again and again.
The prophet Micah said in 700BC that the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem. The odds were 1 in 100 that he could be right
King David described in 1000 BC in detail that the Messiah would be crucified even though crucifixion had not yet been instituted. He even predicted the exact words the Messiah would speak on the cross . The odds were 1 in 10,000 that he could have known.
What are the odds that one man could have fulfilled the 2 prophecies just mentioned ? The answer is 1 in 100 quadrillion (that is like covering the state of Texas 2 feet deep in silver dollars, blindfolding a man, and asking him to find one marked coin. That is for the two I just mentioned. Jesus fulfilled over 300 specific prophecies)
In other words this stuff is true. It changes our lives because we find honest answers to questions once we discover the source of truth. It is Jesus, we find it in His Word.
Let’s notice some things in this passage that remind us. The first is easy. It restates what we already said; He is Truth and we are to focus on Him (v.16b—17). "...but we were eyewitnesses of His majesty. For he received honor and glory from God the Father when the voice came to Him from the majestic glory, saying, ‘This is my son whom I love, with Him I am well pleased.’”
The focus of truth is Jesus Christ. If you want to understand the meaning of life, history, the world, your life, your personal history, and what happens around you, you must focus on him. If you don’t you will always be confused and have very little peace in your life.
The next thing to remember is this. He is truth, You are to be aware of impostors (v.16a). “We did not follow cleverly invented stories when we told you about the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.” I have found that often cults aren't as Satanic as they are silly. New age is not as diabolic as it is dippy.
Many things that people flock to, find them leaving common sense at the door. A few years ago our church met next to a place called the Cosmic Light Center. I asked what they were doing and they tried to sell me crystals. They insisted the crystals contained “power” and would make me "feel better." I laughed and shared with the rock sellers that it isn't real. There is nothing underneath. You can’t get power when there is nothing to produce the power and it doesn't come from their crystals!
People fall for this because they are searching for something. But beware, just because you are a Christian doesn’t make you exempt. Think of a few of the Christian cons that we have heard about and still hear about. (And if you have been believing these, don’t tell anyone. Now you are off the hook.)
There is no computer being built in Geneva by the antichrist that knows everything about you. Madelyn M. O’ Hare isn’t starting a movement to get Christian programming banned from television and radio (Touched by an Angel will still be on CBS). You might remember the 88 reasons that the rapture would occur in 1988. It didn’t. and now many authors are telling us that it will happen this year. Now remember these are some of the same prophets of doom who warned us about the January 1, 2000 crisis. And if you still listen to any of these guys, shame on you!
What is the point? Simple, stick with the Word and don't get fooled by the hucksters because they can be secular and/or spiritual but they are hucksters all the same. Andy Rooney once said, "A great number of people don't have the right to their own opinion because they don't know enough to have one." When it comes to spiritual matters, God wrote it down to keep us informed. Stick with the Word!
Next see that He is truth You are to recognize it. Look at what these verses say:
(16c) But we were eyewitnesses of his majesty
(17) For he received honor and glory from God the Father when the voice came to him from the Majestic glory saying, This is my son whom I love: with him I am well pleased
(20) Above all you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophets own interpretation
(21) For prophecy never had it's origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit
Here we see 3 different sources that verified what occurred—the real issue became would you recognize it? We see truth revealed in these verses in three ways 1) the Father, 2) the prophecy, 3) the personal experience. Peter is giving testimony to what happened.
One balmy afternoon in 1982, Badger Stadium in Madison, Wisconsin was packed. More than 60,000 diehard University of Wisconsin fans were watching their football team take on Michigan State University. It soon became obvious that MSU had the better team. What seemed odd, however, was that the more lopsided the score became the more bursts of applause and shouts of joy from the Wisconsin fans were heard. Even though their team was being pummeled on the field, they were high fiving each other as if they were winning! How could this be?
It turned out that 70 miles away, the Milwaukee Brewers were beating the St. Louis Cardinals in game 3 of the 1982 World Series. Many of the fans were listening to portable radios and responding to something other than what was happening on the field. No matter what appears to be happening, the truth is enough to keep you cheering !
