Sailing in Deep Waters

Yo-Ho, Yo-Ho…

I have to admit it, I really have enjoyed the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. That is no big surprise for those of you who know me…

When taken as an entire package the 3 films are nearly nine hours, much longer with DVD extras, of what can best be described as an EPIC adventure. You could spend a day taking this voyage into the Caribbean. However, the best part is if you are looking for spiritual themes they are easy to find.

The first two movies are about the price of sin, the desire for redemption, the ease with which our souls are imperiled, and the desperate attempts of the spiritually unprepared to avoid meeting their Maker.

The only reason I can imagine for missing these storylines in the Pirates movies is an unwillingness to recognize the theological rope that ties them all together. (But since some refused to see the parallels between The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe and the Gospel of Christ, which of course is what C.S. Lewis was trying to accomplish, perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised.)

In the latest offering, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End will not disappoint –either as a swashbuckling action-adventure film, or as a movie that looks at serious spiritual and transformational themes wrapped up as a fun romp on the Caribbean seas.

At World’s End clocks in at over two and a half hours. Actually it is just about ten minutes shy of three. That might seem long, until you realize that in that time the movie has managed to touch on the nature of hell, the certainty of death (and the lies people tell themselves about it to attempt to make them feel better), the search for alternatives among those who refuse to bow to God, the attempts to save themselves, and the enduring lure of eternal life & living forever – among other things. What a way to spend three hours!

Now some of you are saying to yourself, “I saw the film, but I didn’t see that!” Perhaps it is time to revisit the theatre.

Honestly, if you are looking for a film that can jumpstart spiritual conversations, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End will have you sailing in some very deep waters, and matey…you will get there quickly!

In the next Black Pearl Blog we will explore some of these things….
