Snakes Alive - Animal Planet: Part 2
Posted by Rev. Jeff Dixon, Senior Equipping Minister at Covenant Community Church on Aug 25, 2002, 19:37
Passage(s): Acts 28:1-11
Topic(s): Circumstances, Disaster, Ministry

Passage:
1 Once safely on shore, we found out that the island was called Malta.
2 The islanders showed us unusual kindness. They built a fire and welcomed us all because it was raining and cold.
3 Paul gathered a pile of brushwood and, as he put it on the fire, a viper, driven out by the heat, fastened itself on his hand.
4 When the islanders saw the snake hanging from his hand, they said to each other, "This man must be a murderer; for though he escaped from the sea, Justice has not allowed him to live."
5 But Paul shook the snake off into the fire and suffered no ill effects.
6 The people expected him to swell up or suddenly fall dead, but after waiting a long time and seeing nothing unusual happen to him, they changed their minds and said he was a god.
7 There was an estate nearby that belonged to Publius, the chief official of the island. He welcomed us to his home and for three days entertained us hospitably.
8 His father was sick in bed, suffering from fever and dysentery. Paul went in to see him and, after prayer, placed his hands on him and healed him.
9 When this had happened, the rest of the sick on the island came and were cured.
10 They honored us in many ways and when we were ready to sail, they furnished us with the supplies we needed.
11 After three months we put out to sea in a ship that had wintered in the island. It was an Alexandrian ship with the figurehead of the twin gods Castor and Pollux.

The Next Step
Welcome to this week’s edition of The Next Step!

The Next Step is designed to take you a step beyond what happens in Celebration Worship each week at Covenant Community Church. As always there is no set pattern to what we do on Next Step each week, so this week I want to take you a step beyond by getting you to focus back into the book of Acts.

This week our study was entitled Snakes Alive, from Acts 28:1-11. If you haven’t listened or watched the celebration worship service, you can go back and do that now. We discovered that in the passage they found rest, danger, and needs…much like each of our lives.

Read the passage again and think about the following questions for a time of personal study…

In light of the fact that Paul wanted Paul to get to Rome, why do you think he allowed these events to happen at all?

What stories might the centurion have to tell his fellow officers once they arrive?

How might this set the stage for Paul to write about how the way imprisonment at Rome served to advance the gospel (see Philippians 1:12-13)?

How do you see Acts 1:8 being carried out around these events?

Personal Reflection and Growth…

How has God used a disaster in your life for ministry?

What have you learned from this?

I have shared before, I will share it again now…often we want God to change our circumstances…instead of the circumstances, God is much more concerned about changing your character. He is there in the midst of the circumstances, good or bad, but the character changes and growth that He desires to do in you is the bigger issue.

Try to remember that next time life gets tough, and join me here next week for the Next Step! Until then, have a great week!
