I read my Bible, but sometimes I get lost or confused in my study
Posted by Rev. Jeff Dixon, Senior Equipping Minister at Covenant Community Church on Jan 2, 2002, 20:24

Sure, there are some things that all of us need to do from time to time to help us along in our study of God's word. Let me remind you and all of our subscribers there is a difference between Bible reading and Bible study. For example, I read the Bible at various times each day for just a few minutes. I do this for enjoyment and refreshment and it helps me keep my focus on the father. It only takes a few moments, many times I use Psalms and Proverbs for this. The time I study is very different. When you think about studying, picture a student getting ready to study. Armed with pen, paper, translation of the Bible, and any additional tools (devotion book, commentary, etc.). . the study is ready to begin. As you study you jot down notes, thoughts, and questions about what you are studying. Then you track down answers or seek to understand more of what you are reading.. . .You get the idea. There is a difference between Bible study and Bible reading, but both are important for the believer.

Here are some study suggestions

1) Try to keep a consistent time of study, it will become a habit and then be a regular part of your schedule

2) Try different things as you study. Variety keeps things fresh and exciting.

3) Use the tools you have available. Commentaries, devotional books, copies of sermons (check the Bible study section of our website, it is a shameless plug. .I know), a Topical Bible, and since you have on-line access, all of these things can be found on the Internet.

4) Design a study that interests you. For example someone was telling me that they were using a topical Bible and doing a study on "blessings". With the topical Bible they are moving through God's word finding each time we are told He has blessed someone. They are checking to see what was happening before, during, and after. They are striving to find out more about the blessings of God. It is just an idea, and it may be a lifelong study. . it is a good idea.

5) Don't get frustrated, stay with it and you will find it is fun. . no kidding!
