What Is Most Important to You?
Posted by Rev. Jeff Dixon, Senior Equipping Minister at Covenant Community Church on Jan 2, 2002, 20:01

Isnít it easy to forget what matters most in life? Our natural tendency is to think that titles, power, and money will make all the difference. So many people spend a great deal of energy to accomplish those things. We accumulate degrees and plaques, we stress and strive to make more money, and we starve and sweat to have a trim and fit body.

Please understand, there is nothing that is intrinsically evil about any of those things. But the questions I suggest focus on how important they really are. We make those things the priority in our lives, but are they the main ingredients of a life well lived? Do they make a lasting difference? Will they have any value for eternity?

Here is a little quiz that I ran across that helps to make my point.

1) Name the six wealthiest people in the world

2) Name the last 5 academy award winners for the best actor and actress

3) Name the four most recent Heisman Trophy winners

4) Name the last three winners of the Miss America pageant

5) Name two people who won the top prize on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire

My guess is that you were not able to answer all five questions. Maybe you could not answer three, or even one. I know I couldnít. Yet these people, if you knew the answers, would be considered the best in their area or at worst they are considered successes. In a moment things that seem so important are forgotten quickly once the applause has died down.

Letís try another quiz and see how you do.

1) Name six teachers who helped you during your educational career

2) Name five people that you enjoy spending time with

3) Name four personal heroes who have inspired you

4) Name three people who have helped you through a difficult time

5) Name two people that you can always trust to keep a confidence

Iíll bet that these answers were easier to generate from your brain cells. The reason is because the people that really matter the most in our lives are not the ones with the money and the fame. The people who make a difference in our lives are the ones with character, caring, and compassion. Shouldnít that help each one of us to remember what is really important in our life?

As you climb the ladder of success make sure that you have leaned it against the right wall. Make a difference in the world with the love of Jesus. It is the only thing that will count for an eternity.

Think about it. . .
